Austin, Bernard L. (Bernard Lige), 1902-1979.

Vice Admiral in the United States Navy; held a succession of commands in the U.S. Navy, left retirement in 1964 to assume the chairmanship of the Inter-American Defense Board in Washington, D.C. Collection contains speeches given as President of the Naval War College and as Chairman of the Inter-American Defense Board (1962-ca. 1966); photographs of Austin (1937-1961); biographical material; and memorabilia.

Papers of the Admiral, United States Navy. Collection includes correspondence (1828-1874), much of which relates to Bailey's Civil War service; naval orders, circulars, reports and directives, and personal memorabilia.

Dewey, George, 1837-1917.

Papers of the Admiral in the U.S. Navy. Collection consists of thirty-two outgoing letters (1902-1907) to John W. Crawford, as well as incoming letters from William E. Chandler, John Schuyler Crosby, Loyall Farragut, Marcus A. Hanna, and Hilary A. Herbert.

Dufek, George J. (George John), 1903-

The career of Admiral George John Dufek (1903-1977) in the U.S. Navy included work with the U.S. Antarctic Service (1939-1941), Arctic Task Force 68 (1946), Antarctic Operation Highjump (1946-1947) and Arctic Task Force 80 (1948). After 1955 Dufek commanded Operation Deep Freeze, which provided support for US IGY research programs, and in 1956 he became also U.S. Antarctic Projects Officer. After retiring in 1959 he became Director of the Mariners' Museum in Virginia. Cf. Peter J. Beck, Polar Record, v. 23, no. 145 (1987). The collection includes clippings, photographs, official reports, draft speeches, personal and official correspondence, articles, and scrapbooks. Files relating to Operation Deep Freeze include chronologies, record books, reports, photographs and scrapbooks. There is also some material relating to Dufek's other Arctic and Antarctic expeditions, however these operations are less fully documented.

Harrington, Purnell Frederick, 1844-1937.

Collection consists of correspondence of the Harrington and Ruan families relating to family affairs. The bulk of the collection is student letters from Admiral Harrington's son, Samuel M. Harrington.

Porter, David D. (David Dixon), 1813-1891.

Papers of the American naval officer. Correspondence (1806-1890), 35 outgoing letters, and a number of third party letters which illuninate Porter's promotion of the use of the Fowler Wheel as a propulsion system on torpedo boats. Also, an engraved portrait of Porter, and one of his father, David Porter (1780-1843).
